A beautifully crafted musical and visual journey, Staying Ashore charts a course through Britain’s relationship with the sea, with musical duo Lode performing a live accompaniment to a backdrop of projected material showcasing the National Maritime Museum’s film archive.
Much more than just a musical accompaniment to a series of films, the audience will be able to watch the decision-making process of the musicians, as they choose between playing instruments, using toys, objects and their voices to create the desired sonic effect. The film material similarly is not set, but electronically manipulated and edited in real-time as the performance proceeds.
Exploring the lives of those who depend on the sea without leaving the shore, from fishmongers and boat builders to those with loved ones out at sea, Staying Ashore invites us to consider our relationship to the deep waters through an audio-visual ocean of archive footage as it has never been presented before.
Lode are a a violin/double bass and electronics contemporary music duo David Leahy and Alison Blunt, who have both performed extensively across genres and collaborated on sound, music and storytelling projects around the world.
