Write Queer London at St James's Piccadilly

Wednesday, February 8, 2012

History and poetry event as part of the Write Queer London festival in the 17th century magnificence of St James's Piccadilly, an inclusive church which welcomes and affirms LGBT people.  Just come for the talk or stay and get creative.

Robert Mills will be giving a talk 'Discipline and Desire in the Medieval Cloister' based on research for his forthcoming book,  exploring how homoeroticism and gender transformation were represented and re-configured in medieval monastic settings.

Poet Peter Daniels is a winner of the Arvon prize for his London poem Shoreditch OrchidHe will be leading a poetry workshop drawing inspiration from the gay past.  Beginners extremely welcome.

Robert Mills teaches in the English Department at King's College London, where he also directs the Queer@King's research centre. A medievalist by trade,  he works at the interface between art history and literature, with a particular focus on saints, suffering, sodomy and sex. He is the co-author with Matt Cook, Randolph Trumbach and H.G. Cocks of A Gay History of Britain (2007).

Everyone is welcome and the evening is free -- but there will be a collection at the end to cover the evening opening of the building.  Please drop us an email at kate@untoldlondon.org.uk if you are planning to come.
